Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey are convinced Carlos Alcaraz has had a better tennis year than Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner has won 29 consecutive matches, picking up titles in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome.

But has he had a better season than his rival Carlos Alcaraz, who won the Australian Open in January?

Do you think Jannik Sinner could really win all 9 Masters 1000 events in 2026?

During the latest episode of ‘Nothing Major‘, Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson answered that very question.

Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson say Carlos Alcaraz has had a better year than Jannik Sinner because he won a major

“Right now, it’s still [Carlos] Alcaraz,” said Johnson.

“It’s still Alcaraz! I know!” added Querrey.

Johnson then proposed a different question.

“Winning nine Masters series in a row… Let’s just call a spade a spade, complete hypothetical, [Jannik] Sinner wins nine Masters series, is that almost more impressive than four Slams?” he asked.

“I’ve been thinking about this since last night,” Querrey replied.

“If you ask a generic sports fan, who is having the better year? They would say Carlos Alcaraz, because they watched the Australian Open.

“If you ask a tennis fan, they’re like, no, Sinner is having a better year, he just won five Masters series in a row.”

“If Sinner wins the French Open, my answer in two and a half weeks time will be different, 100%,” added Johnson.

Querrey then looked ahead to the possibility of Sinner winning all nine Masters 1000 events this year.

“What if [Casper] Ruud wins the French Open, [Jack] Draper wins Wimbledon, and then [Daniil] Medvedev wins the US Open, but in the meantime, Sinner wins all nine Masters series, but Carlos still wins the Australian Open…” said Querrey.

“Sinner, because that’s never been done before,” said Johnson.

“That’s never been done before, yeah,” added Querrey.

Finally, the Americans reiterated the importance of winning Grand Slams.

“But you’re right, as soon as Sinner wins a Slam, because if he wins the French, we’re getting ahead of ourselves, he completes the Career Grand Slam… I still give Carlos the edge, because he’s the youngest man to ever put his name in the history books as a Career Grand Slam winner, that’s insane,” said Johnson.

“It’s all about Slams,” said Querrey.

“You ask me right now how many Masters series [Roger] Federer has? I don’t know. Or Rafa [Nadal], Novak [Djokovic], or anyone?”

Only time will tell if Sinner can win the upcoming French Open, which begins on Sunday, May 24.

Who will win this year’s French Open?

The second Slam of the year…

How many matches have Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner won this year?

Alcaraz made a fine start to his 2026 campaign, completing the Career Grand Slam in Melbourne, before winning his second title of the year in Qatar.

Unfortunately for the Spaniard, his winning run ended in California, when he lost to Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semi-finals.

A third-round defeat to Sebastian Korda followed in Miami, before he finished as runner-up to Sinner in Monte Carlo.

Then, Alcaraz suffered an injury during the Barcelona Open, which forced him to skip the remainder of the clay-court and grass-court seasons.

Looking to return on hard, Alcaraz will do so with a 22-3 record for the season.

Sinner, on the other hand, made a relatively slow start to the year, losing to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semi-finals and to Jakub Mensik in the Doha quarter-finals.

When Sinner lost to Mensik, some shared their concerns, but those concerns have since been put to bed.

The Italian has won five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments, completing the ‘Career Golden Masters’ in the process.

Heading into Roland Garros, Sinner looks unbeatable.

A title in Paris would see him complete the ‘Career Grand Slam’, matching Alcaraz, and improve his winning record to 43-2 for the year.
