Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey agree on whether Wimbledon made the right decision not to give Nick Kyrgios a wildcard

Nick Kyrgios was not awarded a wildcard for the Wimbledon singles draw this year.

Kyrgios is a former Wimbledon finalist, but he has not played a match at the grass court major since losing to Novak Djokovic in the 2022 final.

After struggling with knee, wrist and foot injuries in the last four years, Kyrgios recently returned to the grass courts and won a singles match in Stuttgart.

However, Kyrgios was not awarded a wildcard for Wimbledon, with the likes of Stan Wawrinka and Grigor Dimitrov being picked over him, and Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey have now given their verdict on this decision.

Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey say Nick Kyrgios should not have been given a Wimbledon wildcard

Since Kyrgios was not awarded a wildcard, his physical struggles were evident once again in his first round defeat at the Mallorca Championships.

This is the key reason why Johnson and Querrey believe Kyrgios should not have been given a wildcard, as there are doubts over whether he would be able to be competitive in a best-of-five set match.

“No,” Johnson responded when asked if Kyrgios should have been given a Wimbledon wildcard on the Nothing Major Podcast. “Look, he’s still a big name for sure, but he played Stuttgart and won a match, then pulled out of Halle and pulled out of Mallorca.”

Querrey responded, “He didn’t pull out, but he was like limping around. In Australia this year he played Adelaide, lost first round and was limping around, then pulled out of Australia. You can’t give him a wildcard, because it’s a 50/50 he pulls out and if he plays it’s a 50/50 as to whether he kind of tries.”

John Isner added, “He’s just struggling with his body.”

Johnson: “If he plays all three tournaments on grass and he makes like quarters, semis, finals, which he is capable of doing, yeah I wouldn’t be surprised if he got one, but hard to give him one. They’re not trying to sell tickets at Wimbledon.”

Isner: “No, they’re not. They’re not trying to sell tickets at Wimbledon, it’s not Mallorca. No offence to Mallorca.”

Who is Nick Kyrgios playing in the doubles draw at Wimbledon?

Although Kyrgios will not be in the singles draw at Wimbledon this year, he was awarded a wildcard for the doubles tournament alongside Alexander Bublik.

Kyrgios is a doubles Grand Slam champion, but he and Bublik will be up against it after the Wimbledon draw was announced.

In the first round, Kyrgios and Bublik have been drawn to play against sixth seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic.

Arevalo and Pavic have won a Grand Slam together before at Roland Garros in 2024, and are coming into Wimbledon this year in good form after winning Queen’s.
