Stefanos Tsitsipas produced his best performance in well over a year to defeat world number six Taylor Fritz at the United Cup.

Tsitsipas defeated Great Britain’s Billy Harris in a ‘high-quality’ match the day prior, and followed up this result by beating Fritz 6-4, 7-5 in Perth on Wednesday.

Unfortunately for Tsitsipas, his efforts were in vain, as his team eventually lost 2-1 to the United States.

However, after a disappointing 2025 season, Tsitsipas will hope that his form in Australia continues throughout the rest of 2026.

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ Grand Slam final goal now looks more realistic after stunning Taylor Fritz

Earlier this week, Stefanos Tsitsipas vocalised his main goal for the 2026 season.

“Professionally speaking, I would like to see myself in a Grand Slam final,” Tsitsipas said.

“It doesn’t matter which Grand Slam. That’s my New Year’s resolution. I want to be fit, get healthy and, at some point in the year, compete in a Grand Slam final again.

“I don’t want to wait for opportunities. I want to create them myself.”

This goal had seemed unlikely to transpire due to the Greek star’s terrible form throughout 2025; Tsitsipas lost to a plethora of players ranked lower than him while dealing with injury issues throughout the year.

However, his form this week has given tennis fans an insight into the true potential of Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Tennis fans must not forget that Tsitsipas is a former world number three and a two-time Grand Slam finalist; a player who is more than capable of defeating anyone on the ATP Tour when his game is firing on all cylinders.

Tsitsipas’ victory against Fritz has sent a warning to his rivals; Stefanos Tsitsipas is back firing and ready to challenge for the biggest titles on the ATP Tour once again.

After defeating Fritz on Wednesday, Tsitsipas said: “I tried my best. I was fighting for the team. It was such a great match from my end. Having my teammates by my side is extremely special.

“I was running out of energy towards the end. They kept me going. The crowd was lovely. Thank you guys for showing so much energy throughout the match.”

“I was aware of the level I had to bring out today. I really owe it to my team. Putting that much effort on the court, it’s something I was visualizing last night before going to bed.

“I was playing the match in my mind. I’m happy it went exactly the way I planned it to go. I was especially pleased with my serve and how I dealt with pressure moments. Really clear headed in my execution and my game plan.

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ Grand Slam finals

The Greek superstar made his first Grand Slam final at the 2021 French Open.

After defeating Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev on his way to the final, Tsitsipas was defeated by Novak Djokovic.

The loss was particularly excruciating for Tsitsipas due to the fact that he was leading Djokovic by two sets to love.
