The number one seed, who lies ninth in the year to date standings, beat Italian Andreas Seppi 6-1 6-3 and will meet Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in Friday’s last-eight bout.

Second seed Tommy Haas of Germany withdrew with flu to the benefit of Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen.

Eighth seed Feliciano Lopez was beaten 4-6 6-4 6-1 by Belgian Olivier Rochus, while Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus defeated American Robert Kendrick 6-2 6-2.

Qualifier Arnaud Clement also reached the last eight with a 3-6 7-6 (9/7) 6-1 win over Germany’s Michael Berrer.
