Jannik Sinner has continued his ruthless run of form by storming past Alexander Zverev in the final of the Madrid Open.
The Italian superstar needed just 57 minutes to defeat the German, emerging victorious 6-1, 6-2 in the Spanish capital.
Sinner now has four titles to his name in 2026, all of which have hugely impressively arrived at ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.
The world number one has lifted the trophies at Indian Wells, the Miami Open, Monte Carlo and now the Madrid Open, taking his record for the season to 30-2.
Despite the success, former player Paolo Bertolucci has noticed recent criticism towards his fellow Italian, which he has now called out on social media.
What does Alexander Zverev have to do to change his results against Jannik Sinner?
Paolo Bertolucci slams ‘tennis pundits’ over Jannik Sinner comments
A six-time ATP winner and now a tennis commentator, Bertolucci wrote on X in Italian before the Madrid Open final: “I would like to inform the tennis pundits that Jannik Sinner, current world No. 1, is absolutely capable of programming his own schedule without the need to follow your enlightened but useless advice.”
He added: “But where did that handful of know-it-alls pop up from who, without having spoken to Sinner or anyone on his team, spread the rumor that the world No. 1 would probably skip Rome?”
Home favorite Sinner is indeed on the entry list for Rome, which is next up in the 2026 ATP calendar, starting later this week.
The 24-year-old has clearly planned his schedule to date meticulously, and is certainly looking fresh and extremely dangerous every time he takes to the court.
When does Jannik Sinner next lose a tennis match? 👀
Boris Becker reacts to Jannik Sinner’s Madrid Open final win vs Alexander Zverev
Sinner has been very busy of late, but the Italian has been reaping the rewards of his commitment to the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.
He has now remarkably won five such events in a row, becoming the first man to achieve the feat, which includes his success from Paris last year.
And his latest efforts have now caught the eye of former player Boris Becker, who was left surprised and somewhat disappointed by the Madrid Open final.
He wrote on X: “Wow… Jannik Sinner beats Alexander Zverev in 57min 6:1 6:2… it wasn’t a match we all were hoping for!”
Sinner can, of course, now win yet another ATP Masters 1000 title in Rome, which is very much a possibility given his fantastic form and the lack of Carlos Alcaraz.
- ATP Masters 1000 Madrid (Outdoor/Clay)
- ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo (Outdoor/Clay)
- ATP Masters 1000 Miami (Outdoor/Hard)
- ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells (Outdoor/Hard)
- ATP Masters 1000 Paris (Indoor/Hard)
Alcaraz attended the Madrid Open but couldn’t play because of a wrist injury, which will also rule him out of the French Open later this month.
And that is a massive blow for the tournament and tennis fans, with the Spaniard having played out one of the best-ever Grand Slam finals at Roland Garros last year against Sinner, which he won after five sets.
