The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour has confirmed that three-time Grand Slam champ Maria Sharapova will not be playing in next weeks Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.

The former world No.1 has been out of action since last August but did play a doubles with fellow Russian Elena Vesnina in Indian Wells last week.

We certainly wish Maria a speedy recovery and hope she is able to return to the court quickly, said Miami tournament director Adam Barrett.

I know our fans will miss watching her on the court but I know she still plans on coming to Miami so they will still have the opportunity to see her on site and around town.

Despite MaShas brief outing at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, she clearly still does not feel fit enough to brave a singles event.

Due to Maria’s six-month absence from competition, she has the option of asking for a protected injury ranking once she does return.

It is also good to know that she has kept herself busy off court and is currently planning a drama series for MTV based on her life on the tour.
