The top-seeded American, who was also forced to come back from a set behind, found herself a break down in the decider and facing match points in game 12.

But the nine-time grand slam winner dug deep to break back and claim the subsequent tie-break in a 6-7 (5/7) 6-3 7-6 (7/3) win which lasted two hours and 40 minutes.

Williams will now meet Elena Dementieva in the semi-finals. The third-seeded Russian also had a difficult passage through as she ground out a 6-2 5-7 6-4 result over Agnieszka Radwanska.

Dinara Safina eased into the last four with a straightforward 6-3 6-4 victory over Alize Cornet.

The Russian second seed will face Ai Sugiyama, who was handed a walkover in her quarter-final when Svetlana Kuznetsova pulled out with an abdominal complaint.
