Williams came into the tournament with suspicions she was struggling with a knee injury and while she appeared with a large strapping on her right thigh, the American did not look hampered in her movement.

Williams was not, however, required to raise much of a sweat against the 19-year-old Pole as she won 6-2 6-1 in one hour and 17 minutes.

The 28-year-old had too much firepower for Radwanska as she fired 26 winners compared to just 13 from her opponent.

It was an ideal start for Williams, who despite having won at Melbourne Park on four occasions has never successfully defended her crown.

She will play either fellow American Jill Craybus of Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in the second round.
