The second-seeded Swiss was unable to find her rhythm at the hardcourt event as she fell to a 6-2 6-2 loss.

Seventh seed Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine was made to work hard for her place in the next round, grinding out a 6-4 2-6 6-2 win over Romanian Monica Niculescu.

Czech Republic’s Iveta Benesova, the eighth seed, also progressed with a 7-5 7-5 success against Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand.

Petra Kvitova and Magdalena Rybarikova were also opening-day winners in Hobart.
