Schiavone into second round

Schiavone saw off her compatriot 6-3 6-4 to claim her place in the second round on a day of few upsets in the Eternal City.

The only two seeds in action were number 11 Marion Bartoli and number 16 Kaia Kanepi.

France’s Bartoli defeated China’s Peng Shuai 6-0 7-6 (7/3) while Estonia’s Kanepi was a 6-4 6-3 winner against American qualifier Vania King.

Two qualifiers who did progress to the second round were Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova and Japan’s Ayumi Morita, who saw off Australian Samantha Stosur and Romanian Monica Niculescu respectively.

The only match which went into three sets was Sybille Bammer’s victory over China’s Li Na, the Austrian player prevailing 7-6 (7/3) 4-6 6-3.

Elsewhere, Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro eliminated Great Britain’s Anne Keothavong 7-6 (7/5) 6-4, Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova overcame Russia’s Vera Dushevina 6-4 6-1, Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder saw off Colombian qualifier Mariana Duque Marino 7-6 (7/1) 6-3 and Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic was a 7-6 (7/5) 6-2 winner against Ukrainian qualifier Mariya Koryttseva.
