Jannik Sinner continued his extraordinary form on Sunday, comfortably defeating Alexander Zverev in the Madrid Open final.

Sinner proved too strong for his German opponent inside the Manolo Santana Stadium, defeating the German world number three 6-1, 6-2.

It was a simply superb performance from the world number one, who served eight aces and won 93 per cent of his first-serve points.

By defeating Zverev, Sinner is now the first man in tennis history to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles.

Sinner is now closing in on another record: he has the opportunity to surpass the longest win streak in Masters 1000 history.

Sinner, the world number one, has won 28 consecutive matches at the Masters 1000 level, dating back to the 2025 Paris Masters.

With that being said, will Sinner overtake Novak Djokovic’s all-time record of 31 consecutive Masters 1000 match wins?

“He is going to pass him,” Tennis Channel host Steve Weissman said on the Nothing Major Show.

“He needs four wins in Rome, the schedule came out today, and he would meet Djokovic potentially in the final because Djokovic is on Zverev’s side.

“He is the best player in the world by far, he has won 23 matches in a row overall, and 28 Masters 1000s.

“With no Carlos Alcaraz who is going to beat him? I don’t see anybody beating this guy in Rome.

“He made the final last year when he hadn’t played a match in three months and lost to Carlos Alcaraz, who isn’t there.
I think he passes him and then he could take him for a while. I think this could go for a minute.”

Sam Querrey, the former world number nine and Wimbledon semi-finalist, agreed with his colleague’s prior assessment.

“I do too. He could get to 40,” Querrey added.

John Isner, a former champion at the Miami Open, also said: “I would like to see him maybe take one [tournament] off, preserve this streak if he’s not feeling it a bit.

“I think everyone in the tennis world and the men’s side, all eyes are on him and what he can accomplish numbers wise.”

Querrey added: “I think if he didn’t win so easily in Madrid I still stand by that he would not have played Rome.”

Alexander Zverev’s woes continue

Alexander Zverev has failed to defeat Jannik Sinner since the 2023 US Open.

Since that day in New York, Zverev has lost nine consecutive matches against the world number one on the ATP Tour.

As per OptaAce, since 1990, Sinner’s nine-match win streak against Zverev now represents the most consecutive wins against a fellow top five opponent.

Sinner has equalled Roger Federer’s record. Federer, a 20-time major champion, defeated Andy Roddick nine times consecutively between the 2003 ATP Finals and 2007 ATP Finals.

Roddick, another former world number one, won only three of his 24 matches against Federer on the ATP Tour.

Remarkably, Roddick had the last laugh, defeating Federer in their final match at the 2012 Miami Open.
