Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson discuss if Daniil Medvedev is the third best player on the ATP Tour right now

Daniil Medvedev has returned to title-winning form at the start of 2026.

The Russian endured one of the worst seasons of his career last year, during which he won only one Grand Slam match across the four major tournaments.

However, he has revitalised his career at the start of this year, winning the Brisbane International and Dubai Tennis Championships.

Last week, Medvedev cemented his status as one of the most in-form players on Tour, defeating Jack Draper and Carlos Alcaraz on his way to the Indian Wells final.

Unfortunately for fans of the Russian, he lost a close final to Jannik Sinner, 6-7, 6-7.

However, the Russian has more than proven his worth in recent months, which poses the question: is Medvedev now the third best player on the ATP Tour?

Sam Querrey believes Daniil Medvedev is the third best player on the ATP Tour right now

Sam Querrey, the former world number nine and 2017 Wimbledon semi-finalist, discussed Medvedev’s recent form on the Nothing Major podcast.

Querrey, who was speaking with American former professional Steve Johnson, believes that Medvedev is the third best player on the Tour behind Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

“Is Medvedev the third best player in the world right now? I think he is,” Querrey [pictured below] said.

Will Daniil Medvedev ever win another Grand Slam title?

“I know it’s recency bias, but on the Querrey big board he’s the number three player in the world right now.”

Steve Johnson then discussed the other contenders, including Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev.

Djokovic, is currently ranked third on the ATP Tour, while Zverev is ranked fourth.

I get why, but I have to put Novak at three,” Johnson concluded.

“His body of work at his age against these young guys, making every semi and final of a Slam.

“I still think it’s a toss up between Sascha and Meddy, so I would give Meddy no worse than five.”

Medvedev has risen back into the ATP top-10 following his performance in Indian Wells, and he could continue to rise if he registers a strong performance in Miami.

The Russian has a big opportunity to do so after losing his opening match at the event last year.

Daniil Medvedev’s opportunity in Miami

Daniil Medvedev’s 2025 Miami Masters campaign did not go to plan.

The Russian, seeded seventh, was stunned in his opening match by Jaume Munar, losing the contest 2-6, 3-6.

The result set the tone for the rest of the year, as Medvedev struggled to capture any semblance of good form.

However, his previous struggles at the event have now opened up a window of opportunity.

The Russian earned only 30 ATP points at the 2025 Miami Open, meaning he could earn up to 970 extra points at this year’s event.

If Medvedev were to win the Miami event, he could find himself back in the top five.
