The top-seeded Russian, who was also taken to three sets in Thursday’s quarter-final by Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, overcame the disappointment of losing the first set to triumph 6-7 (3/7) 6-3 6-4 against the fourth-seeded American.

Safina will face compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova in the championship match after the seventh seed advanced with a straight-sets victory over sixth seed Victoria Azarenka.

Kuznetsova, who knocked out two-time defending champion Jelena Jankovic, breezed past her Belarusian opponent 6-2 6-4.
