Safina cruised to a 6-1 6-3 victory, hitting 29 winners against her Russian compatriot in a match which lasted one hour and 18 minutes.

Fourth seed Safina won 81 percent of her first-serve points. She also saved two of three break points, while breaking Kuznetsova five times.

“Playing Svetlana, I knew I had to take my chances and be aggressive from the beginning, and it worked,” Safina said.

“My coach told me to stick to my game and it has worked. It has all been coming together.

“It’s always nice to get a trophy, but the one here at the Toray Pan Pacific Open is very pretty and unique.”
