Iga Swiatek Australian Open 2022

Roland Garros ‘favourite’ Iga Swiatek beatable in three sets, says Grand Slam legend

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander has argued that despite the red hot form of Iga Swiatek, the Pole could be beaten at the French Open due to the unpredictability of three-set tennis.

The 20-year-old, who won two titles in 2021, has already doubled that haul in 2022 as she has gone 28 consecutive unbeaten this year.

Swiatek has won four out of the five WTA 1000 events in 2022, including last week’s Rome Open where she defended her title.

Iga Swiatek, thanks to her incredible unbeaten run, is the understandable overwhelming favourite for the French Open title.

The woman from Warsaw will be looking to repeat her 2020 Roland Garros heroics when she claimed her maiden WTA and Grand Slam title.

However, despite Swiatek being the favourite, three-time French Open champion Mats Wilander thinks that over a three-set match of tennis Iga Swiatek is definitely beatable.

The 57-year-old Swede told Eurosport, “If it was five sets, I would say Iga Swiatek is always the big, big favourite because the level she would play at over five sets, she would always be the big favourite.

“Because it’s three sets, there are a lot of women that can come out and play unbelievably for 45 minutes to an hour and in that time they could leave Swiatek 6-3 or up a break and suddenly we now need a little bit of luck to turn the match around.

“She’s the favourite for sure, but it’s much more difficult to consistently be the favourite over three sets. Iga still needs good starts in matches whereas Novak [Djokovic] does not need a good start in any match and after one, two hours, he will slowly become the favourite over a match that will last a minimum of three hours.

“With Iga it could last one hour and she might not have found her form that day.”
