Roger Federer’s former coach says if he honestly thinks Novak Djokovic can win a Grand Slam in 2026

Novak Djokovic proved he was still far and away the third best player on the ATP Tour in 2025, behind Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion reached the semi-finals of every major tournament in 2025, as well as claiming his 101st and 102nd ATP titles in Geneva and Athens.

Djokovic shows no signs of retirement from the sport despite preparing for his 22nd season on the ATP Tour next season.

Many believe that Djokovic’s chance of winning a major is diminishing with every tournament and now Roger Federer’s former coach Paul Annacone has weighed in on the situation.

Paul Annacone is torn about Novak Djokovic’s Grand Slam chances

Appearing on Tennis.com, legendary tennis coach Annacone discussed Djokovic’s chances of winning his 25th Grand Slam in 2026.

Annacone was torn about whether Djokovic could claim another major. “My heart says yes, but my head says no. I think it’s getting tougher and tougher.

What does Novak Djokovic need to change to win a 25th Grand Slam title?

“The ageless Novak will have to go through a lot of great players and I think seven best-of-five match wins to capture a 25th major title may be a bridge too far. But bet against him at your peril: legends are the exception, not the rule.”

The Serbian star has not reached the final of a Grand Slam since losing to Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon in 2024.

Djokovic was forced to retire in the Australian Open semi-final this year and his other Grand Slam semi-final appearances were ended by Jannik Sinner or Alcaraz.

The Australian Open could be Novak Djokovic’s best opportunity

While Djokovic declared Wimbledon his ‘best opportunity’ to win a 25th Grand Slam last summer, the Australian Open could be a major chance for the Serbian.

Novak Djokovic would be the undisputed GOAT if he won Grand Slam number 25 – could anyone argue otherwise?

“I think if he’s healthy, I think he still has a shot. I think he’s still in that conversation with those guys, but it’s clear, I guess, especially against Sinner, that it’s been pretty difficult for him.”

“He is the best of all time without any doubt. But even the way he expresses it makes me feel that he doesn’t believe he can.”

– Patrick Mouratoglou

“As time goes on, even he, you would think it would get tougher for, but this is going to get a whole lot tougher.”

– John McEnroe

Alcaraz has previously struggled at the tournament, with the Spaniard failing to get past the quarter-final in his last three attempts.

That could free up at least a final space for the Serbian if the Grand Slam draw is favourable for the legend.

The star has won the tournament 10 times, a Grand Slam record, so history could be on Djokovic’s side Down Under.
