Roger Federer is the second-most successful player in the history of the ATP Finals.

The Swiss legend, a holder of 20 Grand Slam titles, won the ATP Finals six times during his 24-year career on the Tour.

His last ATP Finals title was won in 2011, when he defeated Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the championship match.

Federer’s total of six ATP Finals titles is only bettered by 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, who has won seven in total. Djokovic last won the title in 2023.

However, Federer still holds a significant ATP Finals record, one that Novak Djokovic is yet to usurp.

Roger Federer advanced past the ATP Finals round robin stage 16 times

Roger Federer had a remarkable record when it came to advancing past the round robin stage at ATP Finals events – Federer advanced past the group stage 16 of the 17 times he qualified for the year-end tournament.

Djokovic, meanwhile, has qualified for the semi-final stage at 12 of the 16 ATP Finals events he has qualified for during his career.

Djokovic failed to qualify for the semi-finals on his tournament debut in 2007, and in 2009, 2011 and 2019.

As for Rafael Nadal, he reached the semi-final stage at six of the 11 ATP Finals events he qualified for.

Federer made his last appearance at the tournament in 2019, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals.

Federer’s only failure to reach the semi-finals

Roger Federer failed to advance past the round robin stage at the 2008 ATP Finals.

Federer, who was the number one seed heading into the tournament, was beaten by Andy Murray and Gilles Simon in the initial group phase.

Federer also defeated Radek Stepanek in straight sets. However, this victory did not prevent the Swiss maestro from exiting the tournament; Simon and Murray qualified from his group.

Novak Djokovic would go on to win the first of his seven ATP Finals titles, defeating Russian player Nikolay Davydenko, who won the title in 2009.
