Roger Federer announced to play a grass court match for the first time since his retirement

Roger Federer has returned sporadically to tennis since his emotional retirement at the 2022 Laver Cup.

Federer’s appearance at the Australian Open saw him play a doubles match alongside Lleyton Hewitt, Pat Rafter, and Ashleigh Barty.

The Swiss star also returned to the 2025 Laver Cup in San Francisco to watch Team World upset Team Europe.

The tennis legend has now been confirmed to play a grass court match for the first time since Wimbledon in 2021.

Roger Federer set to play Hall of Fame Celebrity Pro Classic

Federer is set to be inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame this year and he will be playing a match to mark the occasion.

The star is set to return to the grass to play at Newport in the Hall of Fame Celebrity Pro Classic, which takes place 28 August.

In a press release, the tournament wrote: “192 career wins on grass, 8 Wimbledon titles, 65-match grass-court winning streak.

“There are few sights in sport as timeless as tennis on grass, and few moments as meaningful as seeing Roger Federer step onto it again, and you can be there to witness it.

“Watch Roger Federer play on the surface he dominated throughout his career at the Hall of Fame Celebrity Pro Classic presented by Fidelity Investments.

“Legends and celebrities will return to the court for a day of world-class tennis on the historic grass courts of Newport, and you can be there!”

The venue is the home to the Hall of Fame Open, a tournament which has been won by John Isner, Adrian Mannarino, and Hewitt.

Roger Federer’s last appearance on grass

Federer reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2021, which ended up being his final-ever appearance at the tournament and on grass.

The Swiss star defeated several of his long-time rivals on the ATP Tour, including Adrian Mannarino and Richard Gasquet.

In the third round, Federer crushed British tennis fans’ dreams by dumping out Cameron Norrie in straight sets.

Federer defeated Lorenzo Sonego to confirm his place in the quarter-final of the tournament he’s won a record-setting eight times.

Federer was beaten at the Grand Slam by Hubert Hurkacz, who swept aside the tennis icon in straight sets on Centre Court.

The Pole even hit Federer with an unceremonious bagel in the third set, which was just the sixth time in his career.
