Roddick sees off Swede

Roddick took the first set in 20 minutes and eventually wrapped up the first-round match in 63 minutes after being taken to a second set tiebreak and nearly a deciding set by the Swede.

The American world number six was dominant on his serve and captured 88% of his points on first serve and 74% on his second. He also capitalised on his three break opportunities while the Swede was unable to break Roddick despite three chances.

Fifth seed American Mardy Fish also advanced after downing Lleyton Hewitt 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 – overpowering the Australian with 19 aces in the 94-minute match.

Ernests Gulbis of Latvia downed Ricardo Mello of Brazil 7-6 (7/4) 6-4 after saving all three break points he faced, while Chris Guccione of Australia slipped past Guillermo Canas of Argentina 7-6 (9/7) 7-5.

Guccione, who will next face Radek Stepanek, delivered 15 aces and managed to break Canas twice, while the Argentinian was only able to capitalise on one break opportunity.

Qualifier Todd Widom upset fellow American and eighth seed Robbie Ginepri 3-6 7-6 (7/2) 6-4. Widom fought off eight of nine break attempts by Ginepri to advance in just over two hours.

Finally, Denis Gremelmayr of Germany downed Roko Karanusic of Croatia 3-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-2.
