Robredo had not reached a quarter-final since last summer at the Beijing Olympics – a drought which spanned six tournaments – but outlasted Dabul in one hour and 45 minutes.

The 26-year-old world number 19 will attempt to reach his first semi-final since claiming the title in Bastad last July when he faces Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela, who defeated compatriot Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-4 7-6 (7/4).

Robredo has yet to drop a set against Chela on clay and has defeated him three times in four career meetings.

Sebastian Decoud continued to make the most of his lucky loser opportunity as he upset fellow Argentina and seventh seed Augustin Calleri 7-6 (7/3) 7-5 to reach his first ATP Tour quarter-final.

Calleri prevented Decoud from serving out the match at 5-3 and saved one match point on serve in the following game to level the score at 5-5, but Decoud pulled through to win the final two games.

Decoud will face another countryman in the last eight after fourth seed and 2006 champion Jose Acasuso booked his spot in the quarter-finals with a 7-6 (7/3) 6-3 win over Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil in the final match of day.
