Rafael Nadal has one big wish for men’s tennis currently, ‘I hope it happens’

Rafael Nadal has been discussing the current state of men’s tennis, as we head into Roland Garros, a tournament that remains very much associated with him.

After all, it is a topic that seems to be on everyone’s mind, with Jannik Sinner’s current dominance making competition within the ATP Tour almost non-existent.

Of the last five events he has entered, the Italian has won them all, dropping just three sets en route to all of those Masters 1000 titles.

Unsurprisingly, this has led some to criticise the overall state of the men’s game, particularly with Carlos Alcaraz ruled out through injury.

It has created a level of dominance seldom seen before on the ATP Tour, and Rafael Nadal, much like most other fans of the sport, hopes that soon someone can emerge to offer a genuine threat to such an established supremacy.

Rafael Nadal hopes Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner get challenged soon

Speaking to EFE, as relayed by Spanish outlet El Imparcial, the 22-time Grand Slam champion was asked about the current level exhibited by Alcaraz and Sinner while promoting his new Netflix documentary.

And, whilst he has nothing but admiration for the duo, he did also share some reservations for what their dominance meant for the general competitiveness of the men’s game.

“It’s clear that their rivals are currently performing worse than expected,” Nadal began, admitting: “So they’ve earned this privilege of being ahead of the rest.

“They deserve to be congratulated, and what Jannik Sinner is doing. Winning the first Masters 1000s of the season is unique and exceptional. As a fan, I’m enjoying these records being broken.

“Carlos (Alcaraz) has seven Grand Slam titles. It’s a great era for tennis, with two players who are defining a generation.”

However, he has called upon the rest of the ATP Tour to step up, asking: “Are there any more players? Anyone else? It’s a real possibility, and for the good of our sport, I hope it happens.”

Has men’s tennis become boring since Carlos Alcaraz’s injury?

As Nadal alludes to, the men’s game will be better off by the emergence of another challenger.

Sadly, one does not seem readily forthcoming just yet.

Alcaraz and Sinner’s rivalry, whilst still very much in its infancy, has already captured the imagination of tennis fans all across the globe. The way in which they have battled for the sport’s elite honours, time and time again, is astounding given their respective youth.

However, when one of them is then absent, this creates a problem.

Nadal has been discussing Alcaraz’s injury recently having suffered it himself, just days before the 22-year-old withdrew from Wimbledon two months in advance.

Is Jannik Sinner making men’s tennis boring to watch? 👀

This sent real shockwaves throughout the sporting world, because it effectively confirmed two more months of total Sinner dominance.

What he is accomplishing cannot be downplayed; his current run of form is legendary.

However, few can argue that it does not get boring to see just one man win everything without even the slightest hint of trouble, with this trend set to continue at Roland Garros as well.

With Alcaraz out, now is the perfect time for that challenger that Nadal seeks to emerge. It remains to be seen who will make that step up.
