Rafael Nadal: ‘Carlos Alcaraz has enormous potential but needs more time’

Rafael Nadal described it a ‘special day’ after he and Carlos Alcaraz played out an entertaining contest in Madrid.

Alcaraz is hyped to be the future of Spanish tennis, with many tipping him to break into the top 20 in the next couple of years.

On the day, Nadal was much too strong for the youngster, who was celebrating his 18th birthday, powering to a 6-1, 6-2 win.

However, he said the fact the fans got to watch it after a year of Covid-enforced restrictions really made it a special occasion for the players.

“It is a special day,” Rafael Nadal said after the match. “The public does not know what we have missed, we had lost a basic part of the sport, which are the fans.

On the match and his form in general, Nadal added: “The victory in Barcelona has helped me. I have had good training sessions.

“Today was a match against Carlos, who has enormous potential and only needs a little time.

“He is a great tennis player and has clear things and a very good values, which is something that this society needs.”
