World number 34 Querrey entered the tournament having been ranked fourth among American players behind Andy Roddick, James Blake and Mardy Fish.

And the 21-year-old had been on the rise after winning his maiden title in 2008 and finishing the season in the top-50 for the first time.

He was also off to a respectable start this season with a runner-up effort in Auckland and quarter-final appearances at San Jose and Memphis in the last two weeks.

A semi-finalist at this US dollar 500,000 hardcourt event last year, Querrey defeated Rochus in their only other meeting two years ago at Indian Wells.

With his rousing victory, Rochus will face another player that pulled off an upset in the day’s events.

Stefan Koubek posted a 6-4 6-3 triumph over number eight seed Lu Yen-hsun of Chinese Taipei.

In other action, Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez bounced back from a shoddy opening set to register a 5-7 6-3 6-3 win over Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.

Meanwhile, Russian qualifier Evgeny Korolev defeated American Robby Kendrick 3-6 6-3 7-5.
