The Russian eased to a 6-3 6-2 win over America’s Madison Brengle.

There was also a surprise victory for Petrova’s unseeded compatriot Alla Kudryavtseva, 7-5 6-2 against America’s Jill Craybass, while Germany’s Julia Goerges beat Canadian wild card Rebecca Marino in straight sets. Hungarian fifth seed Melinda Czink came through 6-4 6-3 against France’s Bremond Beltrame.
