Pennetta was upset by Betina Jozami in the opening round of this claycourt event last year, and the world number 15 was unable to make amends after crashing out early to a player ranked 137th in the world.

Zec Peckiric will face unseeded Czech Petra Cetkovska, who advanced with a straight sets victory over countrywoman Sandra Zahlavova 7-5 6-2.

In other action, second-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro moved on with a 7-6 (7/4) 6-4 victory over Swedish qualifier Johanna Larsson.

Also, number three seed Gisela Dulko of Argentina cruised to a 6-2 6-4 triumph over Tamaryn Hendler of Belgium.

Elsewhere, fourth-seeded Spaniard Nuria Llagostera Vives, who came out of qualifying to win this tournament last year, cruised into the second round with a 6-2 6-0 win over Olga Savchuk of the Ukraine.

Sixth-seeded Mathilde Johansson of France fended off Catalina Castano 6-7 (2/7) 6-4 6-4, and number seven seed Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez posted a 6-1 6-3 victory over Anastasia Yakimova of Belarus.

Eighth-seeded Lourdes Dominguez Lino was upset by unseeded Lourdes Dominguez 5-7 6-4 7-6 (7/3).
