Carlos Alcaraz’s absence from the Spanish Davis Cup team did not prevent his nation from mounting a stunning comeback against their Danish opponents.

The Spanish squad, who were missing superstars such as Alcaraz, Marcel Granollers and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, found themselves in a 0-2 hole against Denmark after the first day’s play.

However, the Spaniards fought back, winning the last three rubbers to advance to the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, Italy.

Spanish captain David Ferrer was right to trust his team, who clinched victory with Pablo Carreno Busta’s triumph against Elmer Moller.

Following their victory, Carreno Busta weighed in on his nation’s victory and Carlos Alcaraz’s absence.

Pablo Carreno Busta says ‘we don’t need to vindicate ourselves’

While speaking to reporters after the match, Carreno Busta was asked whether the team felt vindicated after winning without Alcaraz and Granollers.

As per Punto de Break, the reporter said: “Is there a sense of vindication on the part of this group, in getting through this tie without names like Alcaraz or Granollers?”

Carreno Busta responded: “No, in the end, we don’t need to vindicate ourselves. Things have turned out the way they have; we haven’t been able to count on players who could have been part of the team for whatever reason, whether it was injuries or fatigue.

“It’s good that all the players are available for the captain, so he can see that the team is a team, that we don’t just depend on one player.

“It’s clear that if we had the US Open singles and doubles champion, everything would be easier (smiles), but things have turned out the way they have.

“Yesterday we didn’t have that luck, and today, however, we managed to turn it around. Pedro was stellar, Jaume managed to bounce back after yesterday’s defeat: we’ve all done our part, and now we celebrate together.”

The Spanish Davis Cup team make personal history

Victory over Denmark marked a historic moment for the Spanish Davis Cup team – it was the first time in their history that the nation had clawed its way back from a 0-2 deficit.

After victories for Holger Rune and Elmer Moller in the first two singles matches, Spain were on the brink.

However, a heroic effort by Pedro Martinez helped send Spain through to the Davis Cup Finals. Martinez saved a tie-sealing match point against Holger Rune before winning in a third set tiebreak.
