Novak Djokovic produced another astounding feat of strength to overcome Jaume Munar in the Shanghai Masters round of 16.

After losing the second set, Djokovic fell to the ground in exhaustion, troubled by the intensity of the match and the sweltering conditions in Shanghai.

However, the Serbian star endeavoured, eventually winning the contest 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

Djokovic could have justifiably retired from the match, but yet again he demonstrated the grit and determination necessary to win the match.

The 24-time major winner may have had extra motivation to defeat Munar, as he has now broken a record held by his great rival, Roger Federer.

Aged 38 years and four months, Novak Djokovic is now the most senior Masters 1000 quarter-finalist in history.

The record was previously held by Roger Federer, who reached the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals in 2019.

Federer, who was aged 38 years and two months, defeated Albert Ramos Vinolas and David Goffin, before losing to Alexander Zverev.

Djokovic, who had already equalled a record held by Rafael Nadal, could break his own record if he reaches the semi-finals in Shanghai.

In March this year, Djokovic became the oldest Masters semi-finalist while aged 37 years and 10 months.

Djokovic also reached the final in Miami, making him the oldest finalist at a Masters 1000 event.

If Djokovic were to go all the way in Shanghai, he would again usurp Federer. The Swiss legend is currently the oldest Masters 1000 champion, having won the 2019 Miami Open aged 37 years and 235 days.

Djokovic could also break another of Federer’s records if he decides to compete in further tournaments after Shanghai’s conclusion.
