Novak Djokovic will know that, to win this year’s Roland Garros, he’ll have to go through Jannik Sinner.

However, as he will know better than most, it is a feat easier said than done.

Before their meeting in the Australian Open earlier this year, the Italian had won all of their last five meetings, proving to be a regular barrier that prevented him from winning that 25th major alongside his great Spanish rival.

But, with Carlos Alcaraz having been forced to withdraw from Roland Garros due to injury, an opportunity beckons for the 38-year-old.

Speaking during today’s media day, Novak Djokovic has been discussing Jannik Sinner, and had nothing but positive words for this history-making superstar ahead of this Sunday’s French Open curtain-raiser.

Novak Djokovic discusses Jannik Sinner’s chances at Roland Garros

When asked about the Italian, it should come as no surprise that his latest record made at the Masters 1000 level was first to be referenced.

After all, in winning the Italian Open, Sinner became just the second player in history to have won all nine events at this level, joining Djokovic.

Does Novak Djokovic’s appointment of Viktor Troicki make him a favourite to win Roland Garros?

A big move right before the French Open begins!

“It’s amazing,’ the Serbian admitted, continuing: “He is impressive on all surfaces. He has proven that he can be dominant on clay as well. Being one of the two guys that won all the Masters, I know how difficult it is.”

Djokovic then spoke about what Sinner will strive for here at Roland Garros: “He is going for the career slam as well here. Without Carlos here, it increases his chances.”

However, he did also poke fun at Sinner, referencing his loss in Gael Monfils’ tribute tournament: “Yesterday he lost for the 3rd time in 2026. Against Monfils and Svitolina!”

Djokovic also stated whether he’d be joining the media protest at Roland Garros as well.

Novak Djokovic speaks about Carlos Alcaraz’s absence from the French Open

As touched upon earlier, Alcaraz’s absence at Roland Garros is set to be felt heavily.

However, for Djokovic and Sinner, a huge opportunity beckons.

Is it time to start panicking about Carlos Alcaraz?

He's out of another Grand Slam…

Discussing the 23-year-old’s injury, the 24-time Grand Slam champion expressed his sympathy as he told reporters: “He is a two-time defending champ. It’s a big blow for the tournament not to have him, but that doesn’t change my approach to the tournament.

“My primary concern is my body. If I’m healthy throughout the tournament, I also have a very good chance, as I showed in Australia.”
