Novak Djokovic confirms he will play the Olympics, saying: ‘It is a special joy and motivation’


World number one Novak Djokovic has confirmed he will compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics this summer.

The games has been hit by a spate of high-profile withdrawals, including both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

There was speculation that Djokovic was about to follow, with him suggesting he might reconsider following the announcing the event would not permit fans to attend.

However, he has now fully committed, to the Games.

“I am very proud to pack for Tokyo and join our national team in the fight for the brightest medals on the Olympic arenas,” Djokovic said on Twitter.

“For me, playing for Serbia has always been a special joy and motivation and I will do my best to make us all happy! Let’s go.”

Novak Djokovic could complete now complete a historic ‘golden slam’ of all four majors and an Olympic gold medal in the same year.

Steffi Graf is the only player to have ever done it before, so Djokovic could become the first man to achieve it.

He would also have to win the US Open title to complete it, though.
