Novak Djokovic accepts wildcard to join Dominic Thiem in stellar Vienna line-up

Novak Djokovic has brushed off his French Open defeat by joining a very strong-line-up for Vienna.

Djokovic missed the initial date to commit to the tournament via his ranking, but has accepted a wildcard invitation.

Whilst getting back to business as soon as possible following his French Open disappointment is likely a big part of his reasoning, Djokovic may also be thinking tactically about ranking points.

Any points he wins in Vienna will be additional ones for Djokovic, as he has not played there since 2007 and has nothing to defend.

A good performance, therefore, may make it next to impossible for Rafael Nadal to prevent him from being the year-end world number one for what would be a record-equalling sixth time.

Djokovic joins an already stellar field for Vienna, headlined by world number three and reigning US Open champion Dominic Thiem.

Fellow current top ten members Daniil Medvedev, Diego Schwartzman, Matteo Berrettini, and Andrey Rublev are also in the draw.

Gael Monfils, Denis Shapovalov, Kei Nishikori, David Goffin, Fabio Fognini, Stan Wawrinka, Karen Khachanov, and Milos Raonic will be involved in the tournament too, which gets underway on October 26.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is also in the draw at this stage although the leg injury he picked up against Novak Djokovic at the French Open may prevent him from playing.
