Nick Kyrgios practises Cincinnati 2019

Nick Kyrgios supportive nature in evidence again as he watches close mate Andy Murray

Nick Kyrgios may be seen as the bad boy of tennis but his gentle off court nature combined with fierce support of his close friends lends credibility to the image of a misjudged personality, and this was in evidence again as he supported Andy Murray during the Scot’s return to singles in Cincinnati yesterday

Nick Kyrgios watched on with seemingly intense concentration as his close friend Sir Andy Murray struggled to come to terms with playing singles again after nearly 9 months out. Kyrgios appeared in Murray’s box alongside Murray’s coaching team and Queens’ club doubles partner Feliciano Lopez to lend support to someone he’s always had a mutual respect for.

Kyrgios’s 2019 has been beset with on court drama more so than any other year, including a disqualification in Rome and numerous other brushes with authority. But in recent weeks it seems his attitude towards himself is softening somewhat as witnessed by his doubles partnership with one-time social media sparring partner Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Unfortunately for Murray he didn’t get the result he wanted but Kyrgios was able to show him how it’s done by coming through in a close two set match later in the day in Cincinnati when he beat up and coming Italian star Lorenzo Sonego 7-5, 6-4.

Kyrgios now faces a tough second round against No. 8 seed Karon Khachanov who is gradually returning to the form he showed at the end of 2018 when he won the Paris Masters 1000 title beating Novak Djokovic along the way.
