Nick Kyrgios US Open 2019 looks upset

Nick Kyrgios reveals his surprise choice of ‘favourite tennis player’

Nick Kyrgios is hardly ever out of the tennis news after a series of controversial incidents involving umpires, the tennis authorities and even the fans but now he’s chosen his favourite tennis player and the choice has shocked many

The reason that Nick Kyrgios was watching ‘his favourite tennis player ever’ at the US Open yesterday isn’t totally clear but there is plenty of speculation that a new found love match is the impetus behind his vocal support for Russian teenager Anna Kalinskaya.

Yesterday Kyrgios watched the 127th ranked 20 year old play a doubles with her partner Yulia Putintseva as they booked their place in the round 3 of the US Open ladies doubles, where they will play the top seeds.

One courtside reporter noted that as the young Russian strolled onto court to start her match Kyrgios was already waiting courtside and announced her arrival by shouting, “that’s my favourite tennis player”.

Kyrgios lost to another another young Russian, Andrey Rublev, in the men’s singles and is also out of the mens doubles after giving a walkover in his second round tie with Marius Copil. He is also facing the possibility of a lengthy ban from the sport after suggesting that the ATP Tour was a corrupt organisation. He subsequently backtracked in an apology on his personal Twitter feed but further disciplinary action is still a possibility.
