Nick Kyrgios accuses Lleyton Hewitt of ‘throwing him under the bus’

Nick Kyrgios has accused Australia United Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt of ‘throwing him under the bus.’

Kyrgios decided to withdraw from the event at the last minute, with his teammates only finding out just ten minutes before a scheduled press conference.

He withdrew due to fears over injury, although Hewitt was not impressed at all at the manner in which the withdrawal had been handled by the Wimbledon finalist.

“I was in the same boat as all the other players yesterday, I didn’t know anymore,’ Hewitt said after Kyrgios’ withdrawal.

“So it was pretty tough for everyone. It was more the lack of communication I think, for these guys not knowing.

“For the whole team, it was pretty tough not knowing what was going on for the last 24 hours. It’s more the communication, and if it was just worrying Nick, that’s one thing.’

However, Ajla Tomljanovic also withdrew just hours before her scheduled match against Great Britain’s Harriet Dart, and Kyrgios was keen to immediately go on the attack by speculating what the response would be from women’s captain Sam Stosur.

“Mmm I wonder if Stosur will throw her under the bus like our captain did for me,” Kyrgios tweeted in reference to Hewitt. “Hard to prepare when you don’t know what’s going on.”
