Nadal announced on Monday he would not be taking part in the showpiece event after taking medical advice regarding his knee injury.

Losing the 22-year-old superstar is a huge blow for Spain, but Nadal said: “I’m conscious of the fact my team have the ability to win without me in Mar del Plata. Spain have top-quality players who can achieve the win – they are going to have my support.”

He added: “Now the Argentinians are bigger favourites than before and this should be an advantage (for us) because they have the pressure on them.

“The final does not end with my absence. When I’ve been with my team, I am just one of the four and at no moment have I wanted to be like a leader.”
