The British number one and world number four was due to meet France’s Richard Gasquet in the quarter-finals of the Dubai tournament but pulled out shortly before the match was scheduled to start.

And the Lawn Tennis Association confirmed on Monday that Murray would not recover in time to face the Ukrainians in the Europe/Africa Zone second-round clash at the Braehead Arena in Renfrewshire, which starts on Friday.

A spokesman for Murray confirmed the Scot’s withdrawal in a statement on the LTA website, saying: “After daily visits from the LTA doctor and a number of medical tests, Andy has been told to rest for at least seven days to overcome his virus.

“Andy is greatly disappointed that he has to pull out of the upcoming Davis Cup tie as he was looking forward to playing for Great Britain in front of his home crowd.

“Andy will be right behind John Lloyd and the team when they compete against Ukraine this Friday.”
