Murray, 21, joins Hoy and six other Olympic gold medallists from Beijing 2008 – Bradley Wiggins, Nicole Cooke, Rebecca Romero, Rebecca Adlington, Ben Ainslie and Christine Ohuruogu – along with favourite for the award Lewis Hamilton and boxer Joe Calzaghe.

The winner will be decided by a phone vote held during the Sports Personality of the Year show at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on December 14.
