The 21-year-old saw off the Frenchman at Indian Wells in only his second singles match since withdrawing from the Dubai Open quarter-finals last month with a virus.

Murray said: “t was very good apart from a couple of games,” he said. “The one where I got broken in the first set was disappointing. I had a couple of sloppy points and lost concentration a little bit.

He added: “But I’m hitting the ball well and it was much better than the first match (against Albert Montanes).

“I felt good. Physically I need to get a better. I was breathing harder than I’d like after some of the long points. But I was happy with my movement.

“With my groundstrokes, I’m not making many errors but I’m not making that many winners either so hopefully I’ll be able to work on that later this week by progressing.

“I’m not putting any extra on myself this week though. It takes a little bit of time to get that rhythm back.”
