Murray, whose post-US Open form has seen him climb from outside the world’s top 10 back up to No.6 , winning three titles in Shenzhen, Vienna and Valencia to make a late surge for the year-end championships, has avoided all of the year’s Grand Slam champions.

With French Open champion Rafael Nadal absent in order to undergo surgery to remove his appendix this week, the three remaining major winners in 2014; Stan Wawrinka (Australian Open), Djokovic (Wimbledon) and Marin Cilic (US Open) have all been drawn in Group A along with Tomas Berdych.

Murray has been drawn in Group B with Roger Federer, and debutants Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic. Federer, who can finish the year as world No.1, will be favourite to win Group B, with Djokovic, unbeaten in his last 27 indoor matches, the overwhelming favourite to win Group A.

Murray, who suffered his fourth straight defeat to Djokovic in Paris last week, missed last year’s World Tour Finals after undergoing back surgery in September 2013.
