The defeat was the first time the 33-year-old Moya has lost in the opening round at the clay-court tournament he won in 2002 and 2004.

“I am obviously disappointed,” said Moya.

“I had the match on my racquet, I only needed to close it.

“I am very happy however with my game level for the first set and a half. Gasquet was able to take advantage of the few opportunities he had to turn the match around.”

Qualifier Eduardo Schwank overcame local hope Santiago Gonzalez 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/4) while Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci beat Oscar Hernandez 6-3 6-2.

In the women’s draw, second seed Agnes Szavay recovered from losing to first set against Sandra Zahlavova to win 2-6 6-1 6-3.

Fellow seeds Sara Errani (sixth) and Palona Hercog (eighth) also won through.

Italian Errani beat Masa Zec Peskiric 6-3 6-2 while Poland’s Hercog was too good for veteran Rossana de los Rios 6-4 6-1.

Canada’s Sharon Finchman upset Sorana Cirstea, who is ranked 89 places higher than her, 6-2 6-0 while their were also first-round wins for Czech pair Barbora Zahlavova Strycov and Renata Voracova as well as France’s Alize Cornet.
