Juan Ignacio Chela enjoyed a winning return following a long lay-off with a back problem as he defeated Pablo Andujar 6-0 3-6 6-1.

Meanwhile, Paul Capdeville defeated sixth seed Eduardo Schwank 6-3 6-4, and Martin Vassallo Arguello beat eighth seed Oscar Hernandez 6-3 7-6 (7/1).

Daniel Gimeno-Traver also progressed to the second round after his opponent Alberto Martin retired with cramp.
