Mirra Andreeva warned what could stop her from becoming a multiple Grand Slam champion

Mirra Andreeva will play Marta Kostyuk in the 2026 Madrid Open final.

The 19-year-old is the favourite, as she looks to win her third WTA 1000 title.

Andreeva has established herself as one of the top prospects in women’s tennis, although she is far from the finished product.

Serena Williams’ former coach, Rick Macci, has now warned Andreeva what could stop her from winning multiple Grand Slam titles.

Rick Macci says Mirra Andreeva needs to stop competing against herself

On X, Macci shared his thoughts on the Russian number one.

[Mirra] Andreeva can win multiple Grand Slams if she is all about the competition,” he said.

“When she competes against herself, she goes from the Russian Rabbit to a Russian bad habit.

“She has many gifts, as I said, but the key is staying positive in her head.”

Andreeva’s mentality is arguably her biggest weakness.

Earlier this week, Andreeva said she was ‘not a champion’ after allowing a 5-1 lead to slip in the third set of her third-round match.

Andreeva’s coach, Conchita Martinez, explained how difficult it is to deal with her outbursts.

“You say, ‘What do you want me to say?’, I think I even yelled at her yesterday,” Martinez admitted.

“Sometimes I’ve thought about sending her a kiss to make her laugh, I don’t know, but it’s about getting her out of it.

“Being with her, encouraging her, and trying to get her out of that situation is very, very difficult.”

It wasn’t the first time Andreeva let her emotions get the better of her.

The Russian lost her cool at Indian Wells after losing her third-round match to Katerina Siniakova.

And during the latter stages of the 2025 season, Andreeva was seen crying on court as a poor run of form scuppered her chances of qualifying for the WTA Finals.

It is important to remember that Andreeva is still a teenager, and adjusting to the pressures of life on tour isn’t easy.

But if Andreeva wants to take that next step and become a Grand Slam-winning force, it’s an area of her game she must address.

The world number eight has won 12 of the 13 matches she’s played on clay this year, winning the title in Linz before reaching the Madrid Open final.

Should she defeat Kostyuk in the Madrid Open final, she will likely be talked about as one of the favourites to win Roland Garros.

Mirra Andreeva vs Marta Kostyuk – Madrid Open final preview

Andreeva would love to win the French Open, but will first focus on the Madrid Open final against Kostyuk.

The pair have met once before, in Brisbane earlier this year, a match Kostyuk won in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3.

Andreeva will be looking to level their head-to-head at 1-1 when they contest the Madrid Open final, but will know just how dangerous Kostyuk can be.

The Ukrainian, like Andreeva, has already won a clay-court title this year, emerging victorious at last month’s Open de Rouen event.

However, despite being four years younger than Kostyuk, Andreeva has more experience in big finals.

In 2025 Andreeva won the Dubai Tennis Championships and Indian Wells back-to-back.

She will be searching for her third WTA 1000 title in Madrid, while Kostyuk plays her first final above the WTA 500 level.

Only time will tell if that experience will give Andreeva the edge in the Spanish capital.

Andreeva and Kostyuk will battle it out for the Madrid Open title on Saturday, May 2.
