Mirra Andreeva is out of the US Open, capping off a 2025 season at the Grand Slam level where she failed to challenge for a title.
However, that must be contextualised by referencing her age, as an 18-year-old simply should not be expected to compete at that level consistently.
For someone so young, this Russian star is already defying the odds, having won her maiden Masters 1000 title earlier this year and reached the quarter-finals of both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
But, having failed to progress beyond the third round in New York, a clear issue within Mirra Andreeva’s game has emerged that she will want to fix as soon as possible.
Mirra Andreeva loses to Taylor Townsend at the US Open
What Andreeva is accomplishing on the WTA, at her age, is not normal. That must be emphasised.
She is competing at a level far beyond what should be expected of her, and so bumps along the road are to be expected.

However, that does not mean that shock defeats can’t occur, and last night’s was certainly that.
Andreeva, facing doubles specialist Taylor Townsend in the third round, has all the tools to dismantle the 29-year-old.
And yet, for whatever reason, she could not utilise them effectively.
Her first serve was far from the level required, and as such, Townsend brought about 14 break points, converting just five. On another day, this straight-sets match could have been a mauling.
There are many theories to justify her underperformance, but one that could hold credence is her inability to deal with facing a crowd completely pulling for her opponent.
Mirra Andreeva seems to struggle with hostile home crowds
It’s not a coincidence that at the French and US Open, both renowned for their vocal support, Andreeva has lost to home players.
In Paris, coming up against Lois Boisson, Philippe Chatrier completely overwhelmed the teenager and she somehow conspired to lose in straight sets.
And whilst Arthur Ashe was not quite as hostile, it still had the vast majority pulling for the American. Especially given the controversy surrounding Taylor Townsend after Jelena Ostapenko’s comments.
That cannot have been easy for Andreeva.
She is a supremely talented young sensation with the world at her feet. However, the pressure of expectation, combined with her clear inability to deal with hostile atmospheres, is something that she and her coaching team need to address in the near future to turn her into a genuine regular contender for elite honours.
