Several teenagers have taken the WTA Tour by storm over the past season and it’s peaked at this year’s Australian Open.

The likes of Mirra Andreeva and Victoria Mboko are still going strong in Melbourne, having each reached the fourth round of the Grand Slam.

Iva Jovic has also impressed at the Australian Open as the 17-year-old has picked up wins against Priscilla Hon and Jasmine Paolini.

The performances of teenagers at the Australian Open have seen an achievement which hasn’t happened at a Grand Slam since 2009.

Teenagers hit impressive heights at the Australian Open

Five female teenagers have made it to the third round of the Australian Open, which hasn’t been achieved at a Grand Slam since the US Open in 2009.

Andreeva, Jovic, Mboko, Tereza Valentova, and Nikola Barkuntova are all still in the first Grand Slam of the season.

In 2009, it was Petra Kvitova, Melanie Oudin, Caroline Wozniacki, and Sorana Cîrstea who reached the third round of the US Open as teenagers.

The teenagers at the 2026 Australian Open will face difficult tests as they look to continue their progress at the Grand Slam.

Andreeva will play Elina Svitolina, while Mboko faces the world number one Sabalenka in the fourth round in Melbourne.

Valentova, meanwhile, faces Elena Rybakina as she looks to continue her best-ever Grand Slam result of her career.

After beating Paolini, Jovic has been rewarded with a difficult fourth round tie against Yulia Putintseva. Barkuntova will play Elise Mertens.

The teenager with the best chance of progressing at the Australian Open

Jovic, on paper, looks the best bet out of the remaining teenagers to reach the quarter-finals for the first time.

The talented American teenager faces Putintseva, who is currently ranked world number 70 compared to Jovic’s World No. 22 ranking.

Jovic has been near-unstoppable on hard courts in 2026, having reached the final of the Hobart International ahead of the Australian Open.

The American picked up victories against Janice Tjen, Magda Linette, and Taylah Preston at the Australian tournament.

If the star manages to defeat Putintseva, she will face the winner of Sabalenka and Mboko in the quarter-finals.
