She conceded the first set of her match against Anna-Lena Groenefeld before hitting back to eventually win 5-7 6-3 6-4.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw, ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki, from Denmark, thrashed Timea Bacsinszky 6-1 6-1 to progress.

However, Carla Suarez Navarro, the 29th seed, was sent crashing 6-3 6-1 by American Alexa Glatch, while China’s Shuai Peng edged through 6-3 3-6 6-4 against Olga Govortsova.

Michael Berrer, Todd Widom and Daniel Koellerer were early winners in the men’s tournament.
