After the match, former French Open champions Mats Wilander and Jim Courier delivered their verdicts on Berrettini’s injury.

Mats Wilander believes Matteo Berrettini’s injury was caused by a lack of matches

During TNT Sports’ post-match coverage, Wilander shared his theory about how Berrettini picked up the injury.

“It’s unbelievable bad luck,” he said.

“He’s a big unit, and that has something to do with it, for sure.

“Love for the sport, hopefully, brings him back.

“But also, he has played a lot of tennis, both of them have played a lot of tennis, and when you haven’t played that much, these injuries can come up, for sure.

Playing so few events, the Italian’s body isn’t nearly as prepared for five-set tennis as it once was.

Courier was also keen to weigh in, commenting on Berrettini’s susceptibility to injury.

“He showed it late in that first set, he lifted his left leg up and felt for that area, that’s when we first thought he might have a problem,” said Courier.

“It didn’t seem like it was too bad until all of a sudden it just went off early in the second set.

“Poor Matteo, the guy has got such a powerhouse body for the sport, right?

“Monster forehand, monster serve…

“Sadly for him, and this is just genetics, he’s built like a Ferrari.

“He’s in the shop a lot. Ferraris, when they run, might be the best car on the road, but oftentimes, they are broken down.

“That’s his thing: when he’s at his best, he’s one of the best, but his body just can’t seem to hold up.”

If and when Berrettini does return, he will be ranked inside the top 50.

Having been ranked outside the world’s top 100 at the beginning of the tournament, the former Wimbledon finalist has a lot to be proud of.

Speaking of Wimbledon, Berrettini could be one to watch at SW19…

Why Matteo Berrettini could be a dark horse at Wimbledon

With all the drama in Paris, it’s easy to forget that we have another Grand Slam coming up at the end of the month.

And again, several players will fancy their chances with Carlos Alcaraz out of the picture.

If Berrettini is fit to play, he could be in with a great chance of making a run at the All England Club.

Before the injuries, Berrettini was one of the best grass-court players in the game, winning four titles on the surface and reaching the Wimbledon final.

When it’s firing, his serve is almost unstoppable on grass, and no one will want to see Berrettini on their side of the draw.

If Berrettini can find his footing on grass, a less physically demanding surface, then he could cause problems for some of the world’s top players.

The 2026 Wimbledon Championships begin on Monday, June 29.
