Marta Kostyuk lost to Mirra Andreeva in the French Open semi-finals.

The Ukrainian was unbeaten on clay in 2026 heading into Thursday’s semi-final, but was nowhere near her best when it mattered most.

Kostyuk failed to win a set, losing 1-6, 3-6, on Court Philippe Chatrier.

During her post-match press conference, Kostyuk delivered her verdict on the conditions and Andreeva’s performance.

Marta Kostyuk says the French Open courts suited Mirra Andreeva as she exits the tournament

“I think this court suits her best of all the tournaments that exist,” said Kostyuk.

“I have never played her here, so seeing her record since she has been 15 or 16 years old, playing here. I saw on the screen that her record here is 16-3.

“I came into this tournament being like 4-7.

“It is not my best court.

“It really suits her game, and the wind helped a lot today.

“I did not start the best, but it happens. Everyone wins, and everyone loses; it’s part of the game.

“At the end of the game, it’s just a game.”

Kostyuk wasn’t pleased with the conditions, but made sure to credit Andreeva’s performance.

“She played well today. She played solid, she was not missing. I was missing more,” said Kostyuk.

“I obviously felt pressure.

“She was serving much better today.

“I could not do a lot as the court is crazy slow and she was retrieving all the balls, so I felt like I had to go for more.

“That is what was making me make more mistakes. That’s it.”

Kostyuk had beaten Andreeva just 33 days ago in the Madrid Open final on clay.

However, the conditions in Madrid are famously different from any other ‘big’ clay-court tournament.

The altitude worked in her favour on that day, but in the Parisian wind, she was no match for her Russian opponent.

Still, there are some real positives to take from Kostyuk’s seventh French Open main draw appearance.

Not only did she reach the quarter-finals for the first time, but she qualified for her first career Grand Slam semi-final.

And while her clay-court campaign didn’t end on a high note with a third trophy, she announced herself as one of the sport’s best players anyway.

Over halfway through the season, Kostyuk sits seventh in the ‘Live WTA Race’.

If the season ended today, the Ukrainian would qualify for the WTA Finals, wherever they may be!

There is, of course, a long way to go, but Kostyuk has certainly given herself a strong chance of reaching the year-end finals.

She will now look to cement her place in the top eight during the grass-court season.

Kostyuk was poor on grass 12 months ago, failing to win a single match, losing in the first round of the Berlin Open, Bad Homburg Open, and Wimbledon.

If she does that again in 2026, she’ll find herself out of the qualification spots before long.

She has, however, enjoyed some success on grass throughout her career.

Kostyuk has a positive win/loss record at Wimbledon, although a 55% win rate does make it her worst Grand Slam tournament.

After playing the best tennis of her career on clay, she will undoubtedly have higher expectations of herself this year.

Kostyuk will begin her grass-court campaign at the Queen’s Club Championships, which start on Monday.
