Marion Bartoli issues warning to Arthur Fery after watching him at Wimbledon

Arthur Fery lost to Alexander Zverev, 6-7, 2-6, 4-6, in the Wimbledon semi-finals.

The big-serving German played the villain in Fery’s fairy-tale run at SW19, dominating the youngster in their semi-final match.

Fery failed in his bid to reach the final, but can be delighted with his efforts this past fortnight, reaching his first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon.

Where will Arthur Fery be ranked at the end of the year?

He's up 78 places from 114th!

Now ranked inside the top-40, the future looks bright for Fery, although former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli has now issued a warning to the 23-year-old.

Marion Bartoli warns Arthur Fery not to ‘overplay’ after Wimbledon breakthrough

During BBC Radio 5 Live’s post-match coverage, Bartoli suggested what Fery should avoid doing after Wimbledon.

“I wish him the absolute best,” she said.

“It reminds me a bit of Lois Boisson’s run last year at Roland Garros.

“For me, the most important thing now is do not overplay!

“To think just because you get access to all those main draws to want to play every single week on the calendar, because you can run into an injury which puts you on the sidelines for a bit of time, and then the struggles start.

“He has that history of already having that bone bruise on his elbow, so make sure you play the right schedule, make sure you don’t overplay, make sure you get enough time to reset after this Wimbledon.”

Bartoli’s countrywoman, Lois Boisson, made a similar breakthrough to Fery at Roland Garros last year, but has failed to make much progress since due to injury.

Bartoli wants Fery to avoid making the same mistakes as Boisson.

“His life is really going to change, and things can get crazy,” she said.

“Make sure you have enough time outside of that to regroup, recharge, and get ready for the US summer, which can be brutal physically as well.

“Just make sure you don’t overplay your schedule, that can really ruin your body, because all of a sudden you’re going to come up against those big guys every single week, who are going to hit that heavy ball to you.

“He will need a bit of extra time in the gym, extra time on the practice court to build his body towards playing a full season, so don’t rush the process, enjoy it, embrace it, put yourself on the sideline when you have to, play when you have to as well, be smart with your schedule, and absolutely, the world is yours.”

Bartoli doesn’t want Fery to play ATP Tour events every week, and he would be wise to listen to the 2013 Wimbledon champion.

Easing into life as a top-100 player might be a smart move, allowing his body and mind time to adjust.

Where should Arthur Fery head next after Wimbledon?

Taking on Bartoli’s advice, Fery shouldn’t rush any decisions.

He will have his work cut out with media commitments over the next week or so, and the impact that can have on a player shouldn’t be underestimated.

But when the dust settles, Fery should head over to North America to prepare for the Canadian Open.

The Briton can test himself against some of the very best at the Masters 1000 level, and then choose whether he wants to play Cincinnati or travel to New York for the US Open.

What he should avoid doing is playing any of the smaller warm-up tournaments in America.

Or, if he does want to play against ‘lesser’ opposition, he should do that instead of playing Montreal/Cincinnati, rather than adding more tournaments to his schedule.

After a sensational fortnight in London, the hard work is only just beginning for Fery and his team…
