Spain’s Davis Cup campaign fell short at the final hurdle as they lost to Italy in Sunday’s final.
Matteo Berrettini, who has become a reliable force for the Italian team in recent years, began proceedings by defeating former US Open semi-finalist Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4.
Flavio Cobolli, who could be set for a big rankings rise in 2026, clinched the tie against Jaume Munar, battling from a set down to defeat the Spaniard 1-6, 7-6, 7-5.
As a result, Italy have won the Davis Cup for a third consecutive year – the first time a nation has achieved the feat since 1972.

This was a bitter loss for the Spanish team, who were aiming to win their first Davis Cup title since 2019.
However, the Spanish team have much to be proud of, especially when considering they were without Carlos Alcaraz.
Marcel Granollers explains why Spain performed so well in the 2025 Davis Cup Finals
Marcel Granollers, 38, is one of the most well-respected doubles players on the ATP Tour.
The Spaniard, a winner of three Grand Slam doubles titles, formed a fearsome partnership with Pedro Martinez on the way to the Davis Cup final.

The pair won tie-clinching matches in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals, knocking out Czechia and Germany.
In the final, Granollers and Martinez were unable to influence the tie, as Italy clinched the title following Flavio Cobolli’s defeat of Jaume Munar.
“We all have very similar personalities. We’re committed players, and we’ve supported each other a lot,” Granollers told Punto de Break after Sunday’s final loss.
“We know the format of this competition: on paper, we weren’t favourites in any of the ties, but we know that winning one point can take you to the doubles, and in doubles anything can happen… and we believed in that.
“We believed that if we competed, we had a chance, which we’ve had until today, but that’s tennis; sometimes it’s decided by small details, and that’s what happened today.”
The last team to win the Davis Cup before Italy’s dominant run
In 2022, Canada won their first-ever Davis Cup title, defeating Australia 2-0 in the final.
Denis Shapovalov began proceedings by defeating Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-2, 6-4 at the Martin Carpena Arena in Málaga.
Current world number five Felix Auger-Aliassime sealed the famous victory with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alex de Minaur.

Australia reached the final the following year, but again lost – this time to Italy.
