The duo came from a set down to beat French pair Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra on a champions tie-break, sealing a 2-6 6-4 10-5 success.

Fleming and Skupski, who were overlooked in Britain’s Davis Cup defeat to Poland last weekend, are now guaranteed to end the season inside the top 100 of the doubles rankings.

Fleming, from Linlithgow, said on the Lawn Tennis Association’s official website, www.lta.org.uk: “This is our first ATP title and no-one can ever take that away from us.

“But in terms of the long-term plan, the ranking points are so important because it means we’re closer to playing ATP-level events all the time, which is where we want to be.

“We had a lot of tough matches this week. We won our second round 11-9 in the tie-breaker and we could easily have lost that one, so to win the title is amazing.”
