Lorenzo Musetti is only two wins away from qualifying for his first ATP Finals.

The Italian, who described the possibility of qualifying for the Finals as his number one goal earlier in the season, must win the Athens Open to qualify for the ATP Finals ahead of Felix Auger-Aliassime – who recently withdrew from the Metz Open.

The 23-year-old moved one step closer on Thursday, defeating Alexandre Muller 6-2, 6-4 in the Athens Open quarter-finals.

Musetti, who faces American Sebastian Korda in the semi-finals, is bidding to win his first ATP Tour title since 2022.

Lorenzo Musetti says his serve was ‘key’ against Alexandre Muller

After defeating Muller on Thursday, Musetti compared the match to his contest against Stan Wawrinka on Wednesday.

Musetti battled from a set down against the three-time Grand Slam champion, winning 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.

On Thursday, during the post-match interview broadcast by Sky Sports, Musetti said: “Yeah, honestly a better match, a better style also of the match compared to yesterday.

“I think the key was today, I served really, really good, and that gave me the confidence to try to be more aggressive, especially with the forehand.

“And that’s what I need to do on this kind of surface, so really happy and really proud of this win.”

The Italian will be pleased with his start in Turin: he has bounced back well after his shock loss to Lorenzo Sonego at the Paris Masters.

And, as the Italian claimed during his post-match interview, he did serve well during the quarter-final contest.

As per Sofascore, Musetti served nine aces to Muller’s two, while making 68 per cent of his first serves.

He won 78 per cent of those first serve points, and faced only three break-points on his serve – two of which he saved.

Comparatively, Muller faced 11 break-points, saving seven.

Moreover, the Italian did not hit a single double fault during the match, while winning 59 per cent of his second serve points.

Lorenzo Musetti previews his semi-final against Sebastian Korda

Lorenzo Musetti has set up a clash against Sebastian Korda, who defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-2 earlier on Thursday.

Musetti and Korda are 2-2 against each other, with Korda winning their last contest at the 2022 Metz Open.

Musetti discussed his upcoming contest against Korda after defeating Muller.

He said: “Well I am trying to think about match and I need to prepare, and of course match by match.

“Sebastian is a really great opponent, especially in these conditions. I think he really likes to play on hard indoors.

“So it’s going to be a tough match, but I think I focus on myself and what I have to do and not thinking too much on what’s coming next.”

The Italian star also thanked the Greek fans in the stadium for attending his match.

“Thank you so much for coming,” Musetti said.

“I know yesterday was a pretty late match, so thanks again for coming today, and I will see you tomorrow, and I really appreciate all the support.”

If he defeats Korda, second seeded Musetti could face top seed Novak Djokovic in the final.
